What is a community foundation?

A local engine for lasting good
Community foundations are grantmaking public charities that bring together the resources of individuals, families, and businesses to support effective local nonprofits and community initiatives. Gifts are often placed in permanent endowments—funds invested to generate steady charitable dollars year after year—so that generosity today continues to create impact tomorrow.

The first modern community foundation launched in 1914 in Cleveland, creating a model for pooling charitable capital to improve local life. Today, hundreds of community foundations serve towns and regions across the U.S.

How Endowment Works

Endowment funds are invested for the long term. Each year, a portion of investment returns is granted to community needs while the rest is reinvested, growing the fund and protecting its purchasing power over time.
