The Battle Creek Community Foundation (BCCF) has named Emily Deering-Caruso as its new director of philanthropy.
Deering-Caruso will begin July 13 and work alongside current Director of Philanthropy Lynn Ward Gray during a planned transition period through the end of the year. Together, they will support donors, strengthen community relationships and ensure a seamless transition ahead of Ward Gray’s retirement after 18 years of service to the Foundation.
A Kalamazoo native, Deering-Caruso joins BCCF after 10 years with YWCA Kalamazoo, where she most recently served as director of development. In her new role, she will lead philanthropic development efforts and work closely with donors, nonprofit partners and community members to strengthen the foundation’s impact across Calhoun County.
“I am thrilled to welcome Emily Deering-Caruso to the Battle Creek Community Foundation,” said Mary Muliett, president and CEO of BCCF. “As we sought the next leader for this critical role, Emily stood out for her strategic thinking, depth of experience and, most importantly, her passion for making a meaningful difference in people’s lives every day. Her energy, vision and commitment to our mission were immediately evident, and I am confident she will be a tremendous asset to BCCF, helping advance our impact today and for years to come.”
Deering-Caruso was selected following a highly competitive national search conducted in partnership with The Mav Group.
Deering-Caruso said her approach to philanthropy is rooted in trust, relationships and community connection. She views philanthropy as more than financial contributions, noting that community members contribute in many ways, including through charitable giving, volunteering, sharing expertise and connecting people with resources and opportunities.
“I think every single person has something that they can give,” Deering-Caruso said. “My goal is to spend a lot of time listening, a lot of time learning, a lot of time communicating, and asking questions.”
